Cheesy hot spinach dip—grab some chips, toasts or crudites and dig in! Perfect for parties or gatherings, you can double or triple this recipe as needed and it’s always a hit.

Creamy and Cheesy Hot Spinach Dip Recipe
I first posted this spinach dip recipe back in 2010 and all these years later, my oldest daughter Karina still loves it! It was the only way I could get her to eat spinach, so I made it often for her as an after school snack. With the holidays and so many game days coming up, I thought I would revive this dip! (Check out a full list of my Super Bowl Party Food ideas.)
Why You’ll Love This Hot Spinach Dip Recipe
- Perfect for making ahead. You can prepare this spinach dip a day ahead and bake as needed. It can also be frozen before heating up if you want to prepare it a few days ahead.
- Lightened up. Ordering a traditional spinach dip from a restaurant can land you 1,600 calories and 100 grams of fat. Removing the cream cheese and using lighter ingredients makes this dip much healthier. Only 85 calories a serving and you can’t even tell!
- A crowd-pleasing party dip. Spinach dip is one of those appetizers that everyone loves—even spinach haters like my daughter! Other dips you may enjoy are Buffalo Chicken Dip, Hot Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Dip, and Crab Guacamole, or check out a full list of Party Dips.
What You’ll Need
Scroll down to the recipe card below for exact measurements.
- Frozen chopped spinach – Thaw this and then squeeze out the water until it’s completely dry.
- Light sour cream – Fat-free Greek yogurt is another option here.
- Light mayonnaise – Any brand you like.
- Parmigiano Reggiano cheese – I recommend freshly grated for the best flavor.
- Scallion – For a bit of onion flavor without overpowering the rest of the ingredients.
- Garlic – I like using fresh garlic instead of garlic powder for a sharper flavor.
- Part-skim mozzarella cheese – For that melty, cheesy goodness. While another cheese like gouda or even gruyere would be tasty too, I like sticking with mozzarella because it’s available in a lower-fat form.
- Pepper – Freshly ground is best!
How to Make Hot Spinach Dip
See the recipe card below for printable instructions.
- Mix the dip. Add all the ingredients to a bowl and stir to combine.
- Bake. Transfer the dip to an oven-safe dish and bake at 375ºF for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the dip is heated through and the cheese is melted.
- Serve. Place the dip on a trivet or tray and serve with veggies, bread, and other dippers. (I share some ideas below.)
Tips and Variations
- Speed up the thawing process. If you forget to take the spinach out to thaw it earlier, you can use the defrost function on your microwave or place it in a colander and run it under warm water.
- Remove as much water as you can. After thawing the spinach, place it in a cheesecloth or paper towels and wring out as much liquid as possible. This is important to keep your hot spinach dip from being watery.
- Use leftovers in other dishes. If you happen to have any leftover spinach dip, it can be used as a delicious topping for Crock Pot “Baked” Potatoes, Air Fryer Boneless Chicken Thighs, and even this Turkey Burger Recipe.
What to Serve With Spinach Dip
- Bread. Baguette slices, pitas, and mini naan are all great dippers for hot spinach dip.
- Chips. Tortilla chips are a classic pairing with this dip.
- Veggies. Carrots, celery, bell peppers, and other crunchy vegetables.
- Crackers. If you think your crackers are too thin or fragile for dipping, you can set a spreader out with the dip and use that to top them.
Proper Storage
- Refrigerator: Wrap leftover spinach dip in the baking dish or scoop it into an airtight container. It will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Freezer: You can also freeze spinach dip by transferring it to a freezer-safe container and freezing for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
- To reheat: Warm the leftover dip at 375ºF until heated through.
